Wattcycling Partners with Toyo University to Propel Athletic Excellence

January 10, 2025 3 min read

Wattcycling has forged a powerful collaboration with Toyo University to drive athletic excellence to new heights.

This partnership is dedicated to supporting the Toyo University Swimming Team — one of Japan’s most renowned sports teams, celebrated for producing world-class swimmers and achieving exceptional success on the global stage. Toyo University, a prestigious institution known for its commitment to athletic and academic dedication, provides the perfect foundation for this exciting partnership.

A Legacy of Champions

The Toyo University Swimming Team is a powerhouse in competitive swimming, consistently developing athletes who excel at the highest levels of the sport. Since the completion of their state-of-the-art training pool in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, in 2011, the team has seen nine of its swimmers compete in the Olympics. Among these elite athletes, Kosuke Hagino and Yui Ohashi have claimed gold medals, while Tomoyuki Matsushita secured a silver medal at last year’s Paris Olympics as a first-year student.

This success is no coincidence. Under the guidance of Professor Norimasa Hirai, the team’s head coach since 2011, Toyo University has become synonymous with excellence in swimming. Professor Hirai has guided 16 swimmers to the Olympics, contributing to Japan’s tally of seven gold, two silver, and ten bronze medals. His innovative approach to training has solidified his reputation as one of Japan’s leading coaches.

Wattbike’s Role in Training Success

In 2018, the Toyo University Swimming Team incorporated Wattbikes into their training. Working closely with the team at Wattcycling, they explored how Wattbike could complement their water-based training to maximise their performance. This partnership has resulted in innovative training methods designed to enhance athlete performance, improve recovery, and reduce injury risk.

Wattbike products, testing and training are not just for elite swimmers, but will also benefit athletes of all levels in all sports — from young competitors to masters athletes, and even those looking to improve their general fitness. The shared vision with Toyo University and Wattcycling is to empower athletes through tailored training programs on the highest calibre of equipment that can help athletes achieve their potential.

Looking Ahead

The partnership between Wattcycling and Toyo University is a testament to our ambitions and dedication to supporting the development of athletes across the world. Further contributing to the continued success of Toyo university in the pool.

As we look forward to the next chapter of this collaboration, we are excited to see the continued achievements of Toyo University’s swimmers and the broader impact of Wattbike’s training solutions on the world of competitive sports.

Hear from Professor Norimasa Hirai

"In the fall of 2018, we began incorporating Wattbike training into our program. It started as a way to help top athletes with injuries rebuild leg strength and re-motivate those who had already reached the pinnacle of success. The results were immediate and remarkable.

Developing unique programs that balance water-based training with weight training has been both challenging and rewarding. Today, we continue to explore new methods, including high-altitude training and improving sprint and glycolytic efficiency. Wattbike is an invaluable tool—not just for elite athletes but for anyone looking to improve their fitness in a safe and effective way."
